Ensure Ethical Integrity with COPE’s “Core Practices”

Is Your Journal Equipped to Handle Ethical Issues?

By IGI Global on Aug 16, 2019
Over the past few years, it seems like more and more news is being reported around retracted papers, falsified research data, and “ghost” contributors. From extreme headlines such as “Australian Dog Serves on the Editorial Board of Seven Medical Journals,” to one of the most recent, “Top Journals Retract DNA-Repair Studies After Misconduct Probe,” researchers and journal stakeholders are facing the challenge of ensuring the ethical integrity of their journals to help uphold the quality of research.

Due to this ongoing challenge, the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), recently replaced their “Code of Conduct for Journal Editors” with a list of “Core Practices”. These updated codes simplify the principal expectations of publishers, journal editors, and others involved in publishing scholarly literature to ensure that all facets of the academic community are able to utilize and understand these quality standards.

View the following poster outlining COPE’s “Core Practices.”

As IGI Global is a full member of COPE, we focus on upholding these core practices, as well as strive to support our distinguished journal editors and stakeholders in ensuring they are prepared to handle ethical issues. To assist us in ensuring IGI Global’s journals are of the utmost quality, we recommend that all journal stakeholders review the “Core Practices” webpage, as it is a pivotal resource for anyone interested in understanding the principal values and beliefs that COPE represents.

For editors that have questions regarding these materials, or for journal stakeholders who have questions regarding academic misconduct, contact IGI Global’s Journal Development Team at journaleditor@igi-global.com. Additionally, view IGI Global’s Ethics and Malpractice guidelines.

All of these publications are available through IGI Global’s Online Bookstore and world-renowned InfoSci®-Books, a database of 5,300+ reference books with over 100,000 full-text chapters focusing on emerging research.

InfoSci-Books hosts key features such as full-text PDF and HTML format, no DRM, unlimited simultaneous users, and no embargo of content (research is available months in advance of the print release). Spanning across 350+ topics in 11 core subject areas, including computer science, education, media and communications, social sciences and humanities, and more, this robust research database is ideal for academic and research institutions.

Additionally, when a library invests in IGI Global’s InfoSci-Books and/or InfoSci-Journals (185+ scholarly journals) database, they can take advantage of IGI Global’s Open Access (OA) Fee Waiver (Read and Publish) Initiative to provide their institution with an additional source of OA article processing charge (APC) funding. Through this transformative initiative, IGI Global matches the library’s investment with a fund of equal value to go towards subsidizing the OA article processing charges (APCs) for their faculty patrons at that institution when their work is accepted under OA into an IGI Global journal.**

Purchase or recommend this database to your institution’s librarian.
